Some rules first
Every online community needs a few rules to keep things a little bit organized. These rules will be upheld by the administrators, which in some cases might result in articles being adjusted or removed. My view is to keep the rulebook short and simple, which means:
- All articles need to be written in the english language.
- The contents of any article should relate to glass art or glass manufacturing, either the people and companies involved, the historic context or the techniques used to fabricate glass objects. Adjacent subjects, e.g. ceramics, may only be touched when there's some connection with glass making (e.g. Charles Catteau).
- Use paragraphs and proper punctuation to improve readability.
- Don't write your article as an advertisement. Of course references to museums or exhibitions are allowed, as well as links to other sources of information, like books or magazines.
- When adding a new page, always do a search first. The subject might already be covered. If your search brings you to a red colored link, this means the subject is mentioned but not yet covered and you're much encouraged to click it and then select "create the page".
Glass wiki guidelines
Some tips and guidelines which might help you to set up a nice wiki article, that just
screams to be read:
- Get youself acquainted with the general structure of this wiki.
- A picture does more than a 1000 words: add images to your page.
- You can use normal HTML in your page, e.g. for bulleted lists use <ul></ul>.
- If you need to use special (unicode) characters, like Š or ý, look here for the html special character sets
- When writing an article about a specific glassworks or person, try to use a common format (see below)
Glass wiki's categories
All pages are assigned to one of the categories below. Please select the right category (at the bottom of the editing screen) when adding a new page to the wiki:
- History
- Technique & material
- Glassworks
- People
Using a common format
Contributors are encouraged to use a common format for the last two of these categories:
Glassworks and
People.
By using more or less the same format for each page of these categories, information is presented in a coherent way and is easier accessible for the reader. Of course these formats are not set in stone but may help you get started when adding a new page to the wiki.
important : When creating a new page one can select a default template for a
Glassworks or
People page. Click 'content templates' under 'Page Title' in the edit screen.
